most rappers who are jailed for a long period of time lose popularity, but guwop has been the exception. for most jailed artists, when they are behind bars, the current trends and styles in rap music shift away from the music they make. and when they are released, they are caught in a dilemma; either make the music they know how to make, or turn on their fan base and make music that is trendy. but not Gucci.
despite being in prison since sept. 2013, Gucci's popularity has only increased, and his namesake has strangely taken over social media, with people of all walks of life tweeting "free gucci". numerous artists have released "free gucci" anthems or have name dropped Wop in their verses.
many of the go-to producers in 2015 got their big break with Gucci. Future is arguably the most popular rapper as of today, and he is a spinoff of Wop. Future's fans were Gucci's fans first.
It's hard to say Gucci won't go straight to the top once he's released. his influence on trap music is astonishing. he'll be the guy everybody wants a feature from when he's out; indie rappers and the mainstream artists alike will be reaching out to Wop. niccas in the hood and tumblr bloggers will be equally as excited for Wop's return.
i'll go as far as saying it'll be too easy for gucci once he's released. the rap game will be served to Wop on a silver platter. expect a classic mixtape (or 2, or 3) from Wop within a couple months of his release, not to mention a 20-city tour that is being put together as i type this.
jeezy never got this kind of recognition, in or out of prison.
