went to Kay a week before Xmas 2009 and got approved for $1000 but got the $800 ring she picked out.
Her wedding bands were an extra $300
I hate jewlery so we went to Wal-Mart to get my $60 ring
I paid her ring off in less than a year tho

Honestly, the ring i bought was worth 9k, but I only spent a lil less than 5k. I bought it from Blue Nile I had coupon codes from Save with blue nile coupons from RetailMeNot and stalked the prices for the right sale.
I didn't ship it to NYC because the tax was ridiculous. So i sent it to my fams in the DMV area. And scooped it up later.
I also got the insurance which is only about $100/year.
I should have bought the matching wedding ring that goes with it, but I cheaped out. I would've eventually saved an extra grand if i bought it all together.
In my budget, instead of going for a larger rock, I went for a better clarity, which sometimes I regret. I also regret getting the platinum band. Go for the white gold, no one cares, no one asks

The ring I got my wife was originally $1,100. But it was marked down so much that I ended up getting it for $450. It was just luck because the ring was in the style and cut that she wanted. Plus she understood that we had bills we have to pay so she don't know how much I paid but I plan to upgrade the ring for our 5th year anniversary. Hell, I was approved for $800 so I used the rest and got myself a nice watch. 
living w some fam part time in NJ while i'm building my house in LI. saving some major dough this year to put into the house. it's been a bit trying not having my personal space but i keep telling myself the finished product will be worth the wait.
