Of course, it matters, it's like saying authors, musicians, actors, film directors saying reviews don't matter. People want recognition and video games are no different than art where people want their recognition. Also, there are studios that get bonuses based on Metacritic. There's a popular story where Bethesda screwed over Obsidian from getting bonuses due to missing MC score by 1. New Vegas got a 84 MC score and the target was 85 for the bonus.
