Marvin Hagler vs Sugar Ray Leonard:

A little controversy from fans on the decision...who did u think won the fight? Was the Leonard flurries more impressive than the body work and work rate of Hagler?

So a thread in another forum had us revisiting the Leonard/Hagler fight.

Watched it again for the 1st time in a while. Here's my scorecard...

Round 1 - Leonard 10-9
Round 2 - Leonard 10-9
Round 3 - Hagler 10-9
Round 4 - Leonard 10-9
Round 5 - Hagler 10-9
Round 6 - Hagler 10-9
Round 7 - Hagler 10-9
Round 8 - Hagler 10-9
Round 9 - Hagler 10-9
Round 10 - Hagler 10-9
Round 11 - Leonard 10-9
Round 12 - Hagler 10-9

116-112 Hagler

I could see why, many people gave it to Leonard, as there were a couple swing rounds. Rounds 3 and 6 were for me the toughest to judge (especially the 3rd). Hagler started off strong, and Leonard came on at the the end of rounds. Was pretty even for the most part. But Hagler was doing the more effective punching while Ray had alot of flashy sh*t at the end. Plus I believe even rounds go to the champ, which in this case was Hagler.

Other rounds I could see people giving Leonard were 9, 10, and 12. But I just couldn't give him those rounds. Hagler was doing the more effective work and was controlling the fight. Leonard was throwing alot of flashy sh*t, but alot of it was ineffective (blocked/missed).

Even if I give Leonard rounds 3 and 6, it's still a draw at best.

I'm fine with people giving the fight to Leonard, but I just personally saw it differently :manny:

Not gonna cry robbery. Far from it.

Now the Leonard/Hearns rematch on the other hand :birdman:

Classic case of people yelling robbery when they disagree with a close decision.

I know Hagler landed more effective punches, but if effective punches were the only way to score a fight, then power punchers would never lose.

Gave the fight to Leonard. 7-5 or 8-4. Saw the fight for like the 10th time just a few days ago, but dont remember my scorecard.:jawalrus:

SRL #TBE and the E dont stand for excuses!:umad:

Uncertain grounds
Ive watched it a bunch of times and almost always have hagler ahead. sometimes i watch it and i give a round a 10-10 and sometimes i give it to hagler. like @King P said, 3 and 6 are tight..as well as 9/10/12 but i think some of the judges got lost amidst the hype and surprisingly good performance by leonard. the crowd was behind him big time and the comeback story may have lead to slightly biased judging IMO. he didnt do enough to win the belt

i wouldnt go as far as saying it was robbery but i just dont think they got it right

King is right..even I had a few toss up rounds, because the action was pretty close during a few rounds and Leonard was kind of slick because even though he got chased, he would try to flurry and do speed patches at the end of rounds to look strong and the crowd went for that. It didn't hurt Hagler though and Leonard definitely got tired in those later rounds and Hagler continously went after that body at that point in a southpaw stance. Leonard didn't get bullied against the ropes though and kept fighting his way out of that with the speed combinations. Real slick. Round 9 was great.

This is one of those fights I bring up to my pop occasionally just to see him get heated. I can hear him right now getting irritated rambling about, "Leonard was a white man's n!gga!" "they had to give it to the uncle Tom", etc.. Myself personally, I think it's unfair to view Leonard in that light, but I definately think Hagler won the fight.

Watched this live with my pops and both of us were stunned they didn't raise Haglers hand...

Hagler threw too many early rounds away due to inactivity which made the fight close but he was the aggressor and the more effective puncher throughout the fight...IMO in order to take the champs strap you have to make an attempt to hurt him, not run and slap him around at the end of the rounds in hopes you did enough to steal the fight...A lot of people rewarded Leonard those rounds, I didn't and never understood why I should...

1 solid punch > 10 slaps

Leonard didn't beat the champ, he survived 12 rounds with him...

A little off subject, but as a fighter/martial artist man I really admire Hagler...not because of his technical ability or anything he does in the ring. But his work ethic, his mindset and his just overall mental toughness...like he just embodies the whole "grinder"/ "work horse" mentality, he is the guy who never quits, the guy who never breaks. Hopefully one day I can have that level of mental toughness.:wow:

I'm not surprised that Hagler was so disgusted that he never fought again...Flurrying for the last 10 seconds of every round doesn't win you a fight...Sorry....

shyt if i Dont. Man you as a fighter gotta trick the judges.

Take a nikka like Cotto for example, he got away with so much dirty shyt against Paulie, and even Paulie still says Cotto was better than him. :wow:

At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is a win. If you can get a close one or get it by playing the crowd, then I cant hate. shyt look at Herrea vs Garcia. Danny played the crowd on a night that he knew he was off, the nikka had enough sense to know it was close and did eeverything he could to win. Herrea outboxed Danny, but judges score of flurries and aaggression. Thats why Amir Khan did not load up a ton of shots vs Dexon Alexander. the Euros like Khan and Calzahge found out that judes cant judge effectiveness or power. Best to slap and barely hit that hit an arm very hard. :yeshrug:

Before any of u nikkas go in on me, I know judges should not get caught up in that BS, but at the end of the day, shyt is hard to ignore. 30,000 people screaming at every blocked punch from SRL is hard to ignore, especially if four punch combos look better than single body shots. Plus, SRL was loved and he won like the fiorst 3-4 rounds fairly easily outsode a few moments here and there.:manny:

But I could see a wider decision for Hagler instead of SRL. But on the other hand, shyt was obviously gonna be SRL's night after Hagler gave up the first couple of rounds. :mjcry:

P.S. sorry about the spelling mistakes Im high as hsit right now.
