I kinda get both sides...Puff probably bought those publishing rights when there was no guarantee that they’d be worth shyt...we used to clown acts all the time for flopping, but it’s not the artist takes taking the L when an album doesn’t recoup...all the recording costs, marketing, wardrobe, travel, security, radio payola, etc everything else that goes into an album budget...none of that is paid for upfront by the artist, all risk incurred by the label...the vast majority of signed artist don’t draw a dime, and the entire game is subsidized by the handful of ones that actually are widely successful.... then you have somebody like Mase who had one successful album, who takes the advance for a 2nd half assed album (a late 90s boom era major label advance mind you), barely promotes it, leaving it to flop...while he skates off to Atl to pimp old church ladies outta their savings with the preacher hustle....who took that L?
