The alleged gunman behind the Christchurch terror attack would be 'the most targeted person in prison', an expert says.

Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, is currently held in a specialist facility and has been placed under 24-hour observation for his own safety following the death of 50 people in Christchurch on Friday.

A gang member, who was part of a group that gathered to pay their respects to the victims of the shootings, shared a chilling message with NZME: 'We've got friends inside too.'

Canterbury University criminologist Greg Newbold said the threats should be taken seriously.

He warned Tarrant would be in 'extreme danger' behind bars and said Tarrant could 'easily be killed' in prison.

'There will be people in prison who will be pretty angry about it, particularly the fact that he's a white supremacist.'

He said that while there were 'pockets' of white supremacy in the South Island, the majority of New Zealand's prison population was non-white.

It is likely that if Tarrant is found guilty of the killings, he would serve his time in Auckland's maximum security facility where he would have to spend his life in segregation, Mr Newbold said.

'At the moment he would certainly be by far the most targeted person. There's not many people with much sympathy for that, even the white supremacists.'

Tarrant faces life in prison if he is convicted.

The accused gunman, who was born in Australia and grew up in Grafton, NSW, had been living in Dunedin when he allegedly carried out New Zealand's worst mass murder in history.

He allegedly stormed the Al Noor mosque and later Linwood Masjid on Friday, where he shot dead 50 people and left dozens more critically injured.

A 73-page manifesto was published detailing his hatred and how he was inspired by Norway mass killer Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 in 2011.

They only say that because he is white.

When they throw black people in jail they never say anything and just throw you in there and forget about you.
