I always do mental math. When we were kids they'd drill us on these. To this day I'll hear people struggling to work out figures. Mostly to do with money and they'll get out a calculator and try to conceptualize it and I'll just tell them the answer even if I wasn't in the conversation.

The thing about relying too much on a calculator is most people can't conceptualize what the actual problem is and what they actually need to work out when things get complex.

You do that and then when you use a calculator things become simpler. shyt in my country we had to use log tables in math too. Never ever used calculators. That's why you find guys just beasting in foreign colleges cause things got a lot simpler. shyt I did my SATs math without a calculator and scored well. I wasn't used to its complex functions and I'm still not.

No that makes you dumb and dependent on a device. Do the long multiplication.

As someone that won his UIL Number Sense competition....

I'm glad you dummies is finally getting up on things :russ:
I swear to god a bunch of adults should have been held back in 2nd grade. :snoop:

I wasnt a math athlete but during elementary school we had a random Vietnamese savant in our 99% black school. Dude kept me on my toes. It burned my soul that this kid could multiply 3 digit numbers against each other in his head, so i had to up my game.

The ability to cut up numbers or refactor them with division was something i picked up back then. I found out this type of thinking was also practical in integral calculus in college.

But Til this day i hate Darwin Nguyen cause i still could never beat him in math!? :pacspit:

Forget the calculators. Can you Imagine how bad it'll be once AI is standard for everyone? I predict most of the population won't know how to do math by 2050 Because @ChatGPT-5 has their back. :russ:

Those kids are being born right now so you're not far off

How ironic that ai will achieve superintelligence during the term of the dumbest president in history

all of the kids born during that time will be the first gen that will legitimately not have any reason to get a degree outside of AI engineering

:ufdup:Now do odd numbers with that method like 9 x 37. Don't use calculators and only that method
exactly... when I saw her method I said that's all fine and dandy for nice numbers, but let's get into the weeds.....

As an answer to your question, always break things down using the distibutivity property:

9 x 37 = 9 x (30 + 7) = 9 x 30 + 9 x 7 = 270 + 63 = 333.......addition is always easier than multiplication....

So it still works with half of the numbers you'll ever see in life :skip: that's still helpful
Or, unless an EMP happens, you do like the rest of humanity and use a calculator or your phone :skip:
Plus, I'm pretty good at mental math, this just clout chasing
