I love Maxwell, and Im lukewarm on Sam Smith, but of course Smith is more "marketable". Maxwell's peak came in the mid-late 90s, and hasnt been relevant in just about 15 years. Smith is younger and just exploded onto the scene a couple of years ago. I think thats what your friend wanted to say.
True, the white consumer base probably considers white soul artists to be more relatable and therefore preferable, but at the same time the black music fan base abandoned R&B for whatever reason outside of the pretty boy thug types like Chris Brown and Trey Songz who sing about running thru women and not loving them. White artists can sing about a wide range of topics relating to love and life to wildly receptive audiences. Black artists? Not so much nowadays...thats "simp shyt" now.
Do you think if record execs thought there was money in the modern black R&B singer they wouldnt exploit that? They about that paper, fam. Black people have to show there is a demand out there. Give new black R&B artists millions of hits on youtube. Go to their shows when they are in the area. Hype them up to your people and encourage your local stations to play them. Help facilitate the change you want to see.
