Mazi called the shots. In opening arguments made yesterday, prosecutors labeled the death of a promising basketball player a "senseless murder," saying he was an innocent bystander caught defenseless in the middle of random gunfire. The trial of two men accused of murdering Curtis Scott, 21, began just two days before the third anniversary of Scott's death. Leon Jones, 21, and Jamel Green, 30, are charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder for allegedly shooting Scott and another man, Jamal Ethridge, 23, who survived. Assistant District Attorney Claude Stuart deemed the case "very simple" and stated that three individuals - Jones, Green and another man, Ayinde Fair, 22 - acted in concert when they killed Scott. Prosecutors say Green, Jones and Fair, who were riding together in a taxi on the evening of July 7, 1998, directed the cabbie to stop at Jamaica's Baisley Park Houses. There, after Green got into an argument with a few individuals, he ordered Jones and Fair to shoot them. In the hail of bullets that followed, Scott, who was walking down a hill on Foch Blvd., was hit above his left eye. Ethridge was shot in the chest. The defense attorneys for both Jones and Green argued that the case is not so clear-cut. "Why are we here?
" asked Ronald Nir, Green's attorney. "The pieces of the puzzle don't fit.
" He said that a gun was found in Scott's waistband and argued Scott was not defenseless. Scott Brettschneider, Jones' attorney, demanded the story not be "sanitized.
" The attorney raised questions about the credibility of witnesses the prosecution will call - including Jamel Scott, Curtis' 22-year-old brother who was with him at the time of the shooting. Jamel is serving a prison sentence for drug possession. If convicted, Jones and Green could face 25 years to life in prison. Fair went to trial in April. Although he was acquitted of murdering Scott, he was found guilty of the attempted murder of Ethridge in what was described as a compromise verdict.
