I don’t know. I don’t think a lot of the ways we interpret the soul are exactly the same in the spiritual world. I think you have the potential to be soulmates with anybody because we all share parts of one another and are all linked to a common source.
Whether you choose to nourish that soul tie and in what way you do so, impacts whether it will come to fruition and it’s form.

First, there shouldn’t never been an argument. Just a discussion.
None of you know for a fact if one person has one soulmate so an argument wasn’t needed.
Many feel that they’re with their soulmate at one point in time, but they break up or get divorced and find another one.
There could be one or there could be many, we don’t know. But a person is entitled to believe what they want.

I don’t believe in soul mates but I always liked this story/myth.
According to the Greeks, the Titan Prometheus, did not fight with his fellow Titans against the Olympian gods, so he was spared by Zeus and tasked with creating humans... so he created them with four arms, four legs and one head sharing two faces and one mind, and they were very powerful.
These beings frightened Zeus and he feared their power. He wanted to kill them as he done previously with the Titans but knew the gods would lose tribute and sacrifices. So he developed a creative strategy and split the humans which did two things: doubled the tribute and weakened them.
The split humans were in so much misery to the point that they did not eat and would die. So the sun god, Apollo had pity and sewn the humans up and reconstructed their bodies so that the navel was the only remnant of their previous forms.
Each human now with one set of genitalia would forever long for their other half; the other half of his/her soul. It is said that when the two find each other, there is an unspoken understanding.
