There's definitely an anti-black sentiment/history in the DR. And while it's not an excuse, it was something that was perpetuated and propagandized for decades largely because of Trujillo.
My main point of debate when it comes to people in America talking about race in DR is that...the way people think about themselves here in America and the way people think of themselves in other countries is different.
You do this....pose the question "What are you?" to a person in Florida and a person in DR.
The person in Florida will say "I'm black" (if they are).
And the person in DR will say "I'm Dominican"
That's not to say there isn't a racial denial in DR. I'm just trying to explain the primary thought.
Those who act like black people are brutalized in DR or something have clearly never been there though. I mean a black Dominican and a black Haitian are not treated the same, for very obvious reasons. (And for the record, DR should treat the Haitians as brothers, because we are)
