I had read that the previous mayor had some missteps...but still, I'm baffled how this was so close even tho demographics are shifting there.

Lord knows I get that but like...even still this seemed like a pretty stark case where demographics alone should have ensured a bigger margin, unless the dem candidate had some issues or the previous mayor was unpopular. The white candidate not only used some ugly language, she looks like she's straight out of the 80s and has been tied to Trump. Seems like a clear cut case.

I'm from Detroit, so this is even more puzzling to me. Yea Detroit has a white mayor now but at least he's a democrat, connected to that machine.

I think we sometimes underestimate or are just ignorant of the kind of power that is on the south side.

For instance, it had always been said in my people's circles, even before Obama came on the scene, that Valerie Jarrett was low key the most powerful black woman in the country (even had more leverage than Oprah). And I think many people don't realize the extent to which she actually carried Obama (and not Oprah) to the presidency. Her family's clout in both local Chicago politics and in Washington is hefty. She's kept an ear to both the Daley Machine and to the Clinton Administration through her aunt and uncle Vernon and Ann Dibble Jordan.

I say all this to say, that we have both the talent and clout on the south side. We just need to find and identify those folks and nurture them for mayoral candidacy. If we're being real, Chicago black power is not going to get behind a candidate that doesn't have a certain pedigree. Willie Wilson and William Dock Walls, unfortunately, didn't really cut it in that regard. If we can find the right folks and get the right black south siders backing them, many of whom have both local and national clout, like the Murphys and Rabbs, it wouldn't be hard to take the mayoral seat. We just haven't had any quality candidates come forward with the right credetials.
