An artist like Meek is not in a fukked up situation. He won in the music game.

he has a catalog of music that he can make money on forever and celebrity that he can leverage forever

Most independent artist go broke. Y’all only focus on the success stories

independent artist have to use their own money for everything. Promotion, flying to handle business, beats, touring acclamations, etc

a major artist gets money and resources to do all of this and in turn that get a good chance at being stars
Apparently not, as evidenced by this thread and him posting this shyt right now. Catalog so great he hasn't received a check from his label in lord knows how long. He can't leverage shyt if he in a jacked up contract and he already re'upped. And you saying most independent artists go broke the same can be said about signed artist. Most of them in slave contract with language like "throughout the universe" when it comes to their own name. Kanye in the same situation by changing his name legally to Ye, but he was smart enough to have other means of income.

No he’s lying just like every other artist lies. They all signed a 4+1 album contract. The splits from the music that THE LABEL now OWNS is usually around 88% to 12%. The artist gets 12% after they have recouped your budget. We also going to take a % from your merchandise you sell and the tour you go on just to make sure we try as much as possible to get our money back. All in exchange for a cash advance of 50-200k depending on how hot you are at the time.

They all took this deal because they were broke. I give drake credit. He didn’t bytch and moan for 5 albums when he knew he was getting robbed by birdman. These guys all try to dip after 3 albums. Uzi just tried the same shyt his last album. Megan tried to fukking dip after ONE album :mjlol:

Watch Travis Scott is next. You don’t think he feels like he’s outgrown T.I’s Label Grand Hustle even though he’s 3 albums into a 5 album contract?

It was always my understanding that a vast majority of acts never actually recoup... And if they do, it's deep into the album cycle of a project that has been a huge multi-platinum success (or they're an established superstar that has negotiated a deal with better splits)... So that most artists are eating off the frontend advanced and show money (which is the bulk of it), on top of whatever else they got leveraged from their fame...

Meek doesn't really fall into either of those two previously mentioned exceptions, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if he hasn't saw any real substantial money on the back end of his projects....his albums always have a bunch of features and big name trendy of the moment producers....big budget videos, but never do crazy numbers.... certainly not the type of numbers that would force the label to re-do a more favorable deal until the current one is up... that's when a dude like Meek tries one of those pseduo-indie deals, but along with better splits... smaller advances and smaller album budgets come with that...and that's when you get that latter day Cam'Ron career arc

As far as him crying on Twitter about it, dunno...just seems embarrassing to me... threatening to release the details of a deal you voluntarily signed to what end? Shame the label into not honoring it? Good luck I guess

you’re conflating things

Whether or not your projects have made enough money for the label to start receiving a split of the proceeds have nothing to do with him being able to use to his catalog and celebrity to make money

Kanye Is in one of the best deals in music. When he released his contract, several entertainment lawyers and agents were saying that was one of the most favorable deals they’ve seen

Kanye fukked up his advance on several occasions

Kanye even got a 2 million dollar advance to make a movie that he never submitted to the label

I do think there’s a huge disconnect and misunderstanding about what a label charges to an artist that they didn’t advance them

take for instance those Buses with Meeks album cover. It could’ve cost 200k for that type of promotion. The labels are going to add that to the money they need to make back before they start sharing the revenue

Drake wasn't getting rapped by birdman. the only thing they never paid was royalties and they settled that. Drake was getting 20 mil from apple casually while still at cash money. making his own plays. he didn't moan because he wasn't missing the royalties. j prince jr did tho...

They’re talking about this on the JBP

the crew is saying that the label gives you a breakdown of how much it cost them to sell your record and how much it sold

they basically detail If you recouped

the issue is that no artist believes the cost that the label detail are true or fair

I’m seeing Meek all over Apple Music playlist and his feature list is lengthier than a Khaled album. It’s clear they have spent money on this new album.

labels been fudgin the numbers since the beginning of labels. but these mfs have the market cornered so its extremely hard to break under an indie.
