You need to go over the rules regarding writing off tax due to donations. From my basic understand, it's such that if you make a million bucks and donate 200k, you're taxable income will be like 800k instead of a million. This will lower your average tax rate, since less of your income is taxed at the highest rate. So effectively it's about giving away money without paying any tax for it.
