A jury trial is underway in connection with the death of a woman who was shot and killed when a dispute ensued during a party in the 100 block of Reuben White in Crosby Sept. 5, 2011.
The defendant, now 24-year-old Jquaya Deshaie Paul, of Crosby, stands accused of first degree murder.
Harris County Sheriff's officials said deputies were called to the party in reference to a shooting around 1:40 a.m. that Monday morning. Upon arrival, they found Edith Sherrie Laday, 30, lying in the front yard of the residence, dead from a gunshot wound to the chest.
"The Laday family was hosting a party at the residence. Laday argued with Jquaya Paul at the party and a fight ensued," HCSO Homicide Sgt. Ben Beall said at the time. "Paul retrieved a pistol from her car and fired a single gunshot, striking Laday in the chest."
Investigators say Paul fled the scene of the shooting after guests at the party assaulted her and wrestled the gun away from her. Deputies later reportedly caught up with her at an area hospital, where she was allegedly seeking treatment for the injuries she suffered in the assault.
Charges against Paul were filed later that same day. She was free on a $30,000 pending trial and is currently in the custody of the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
