Woman accused of armed robbery attempt

ALANSON - A woman is facing a host of criminal charges amid allegations that she attempted to rob two people at knife-point Sunday.
Nikki Neshea Sutton, 18, is facing two counts of armed robbery and one count each of witness bribery, assault of a prison employee, resisting and obstructing police, possession of a controlled substance, person in possession of contraband and minor in possession of alcohol. The most serious among the charges - armed robbery - carries a maximum sentenced of up to life in prison.
Court records show Sutton's home town to be Luttrell, Tenn., but she listed a Petoskey address on an advice of rights form in the court file.
According to a Michigan State Police affidavit filed in the case, troopers were called to the area of River Street in Alanson at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday to a report of a disturbance in the area. Police said when they arrived the owner of the Jolly Llama toy store, Michael Adams, told them that a brown-haired woman had come into the store and demanded that Adams give her the keys to his car. When Adams refused, the woman (later identified as Sutton) allegedly pulled out two three-inch knives and brandished them at Scott and Adams.
Police said they encountered Sutton a short distance from the store and she appeared to be angry and intoxicated. Police said they searched the area around where they found Sutton, but found no knives.
Troopers said that the other witnesses told them that after leaving the toy store, Sutton allegedly went to a nearby pizzeria where she approached two people in a vehicle parked outside. The witnesses told police that she first asked for directions to a bus station, but then later stuck her head in the car window and asked for money. When the woman, in the car, Lisa Scott said she didn't have any, Sutton allegedly replied, "What if I had a gun?" Scott told police she became scared when she saw Sutton reach for her purse and fled into the pizzeria.
Police said after they arrested Sutton they found her to be in possession of Clonazepam - a muscle relaxant similar to Valium - for which she did not have a prescription. Police also said Sutton tried to bite the trooper driving her to the Emmet County Jail when he refused her request to roll down the patrol car's rear window. The trooper said a short time later Sutton offered to pay him "any amount" of money to not press charges against her and to let her go so she could leave the area.
Police said once at the jail, they found an additional 37 Clonazepam pills on Sutton and that while at the jail she kicked one of the corrections officers.
Sutton remains lodged at the Emmet County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 bond. She was arraigned on the charges Wednesday and is scheduled to face a preliminary examination on Oct. 10.
