America's richest black developer Don Peebles sounds off on the show Empire's negative effect on urban youth with NiteCap's Peter Bailey. He goes on to explain that Jay Z and other drug dealers turned rappers fits the "code of black success" White America is comfortable seeing black men in. With a net worth of 700 million, Peebles wants urban youth exposed to alternative images of success.

I read and liked his book...
...but this sounds kind of like hating.

Jay doesnt fit in a box HE wants.
He wants everyone to be cookie cutter straight lace business men.
Jay turning his life around should be an example for kids because more people can relate to not fitting the mold...where as Peebles used political connections to get put on...everyone cant do that.

He used the example of Frank Sinatra not being influential...
...thats false...Frank had ties to the mafia & government.

but I understand what he's trying to say.

Was this supposed to be an interview or a conversation? The lighter guy did most of the talking and was kind of steering my man a little. He's the one who made the "Jay Z fits the box" comment and that's the only thing I don't necessarily agree with. Jay Z is an example of someone who came from a certain situation and flipped legit where he has been undoubtedly successful. He can't be the only rodeo model but there are certainly positive things that can be taken from his story. I pretty much agree with the overall point. There is a deliberate efforts to promote entertainers as the role models for the black youth tho.

"c00ns" call you a "sell-out", and "sell-outs" call you a "c00n".

Nobodies happy if you don't do it their way.

Same shyt, different interview.

Jay-z is a great role model for people who are in an extremely shytty situation. Showing that anyone can change their life from shyt to the better. It's a great success story but it wouldn't be possible without some of the greatest rap skills ever, so it's really not great guidance to success.

This is interesting........for one reason...................with MJ being legalized in more and more states, we now have white people getting rich off of a commodity that was getting black folks put away for football jersey numbers. HOWEVER, Just yesterday I saw Black Enterprise advertising a conference for black people to get into the "emerging" legal MJ business.....:sas2:. So now kids can?? become Legal MJ "businessmen"??/ :sas1:

I agree w/ this wholeheartedly though

So much truth..........everything stated sounds like a familiar poster .....who could it be??... :jbhmm::lupe: :patrice:

I feel some are missing the message, Television and the way we are portrayed plays a major role in how we perceive ourselves. They aren't saying Jay isn't good but rather the image portrayed tends to lean towards the once the corrupt soul making a change rather than the good hearted child making the passage through more traditional or legit stages. The Empire shows feeds America a image of black success with the backdrop of the illegal activities that are not present in other shows. They're power struggles but business based.
