The difference is Mase did it in a time when it was all new to everybody in hip-hop. People didn't have any references and the information was much harder to get.

Puffy was only 26 when Mase signed that contract. Suge was 26 when he started Death Row. A standard contract heavily favored the label because the artist had little to no leverage & depended on a label. Everybody was learning on the fly. It'd be like blaming the Panthers for not knowing how to counter the COINTELPRO.

We only know what not to do because of the artists that got messed up last millennium. Thus, a current artist post-2010 has little to no excuse That's because every music biopic and show talks about those bad deals and what to look out for.

Len Bias' death is viewed as a tragedy because it was all new. But if that situation happens to a player now, we have less sympathy because of all the resources and case studies available.

Threads like this really bring out the worst in the Coli. As someone who worked in the music industry and understand how contracts go...I get that most people don't have direct experience with music labels or contracts. But seeing (presumed) black people cheer and laugh about a black person ensnared in a bad contract blows my mind. The rap music industry is a reflection of society. Black people get exploited every day, robbed every day, and taken advantage of every day by various obligations/contracts/agreements/etc. You can laugh and joke all you want, but most of the people in those situations hastily sign bad agreements because they are desperate. It's not a laughing matter.

I'm glad Megan has apparently gotten out of her contract. But she won't be the last. This will keep happening. And what we're seeing is that these contracts aren't being given by white dudes. They're being given by black people, often on the street level. Normally the way it worked, the black hustler would take you to the white record label for you to get fukked...then he'd get a piece of the pie. Now these clowns are making their own record deals...and then they negotiate a buy out or something when the white money label comes around. Thugger was one of the most prominent examples of this...the way he was signed to multiple people before the label could get their hands in his pocket. It's wack.
Since you worked in the music industry and understand how contracts go how common is it for artists to get a 60/40 split and partial ownership of their master recordings in their first deal as an unproven artist?

How come Wayno and Hitmaka said that she has a good deal?

Why did Megan lie about being 20 when she signed her contract when she was 23? Why did she say she didn't know what was in her contract when T Farris, her mother who had previously been in the industry, and a lawyer were all involved in the signing? What about the $2M that Carl Crawford has invested in her?

So ole boy was lying about her owning her Masters and the deal is pretty much what Meagan said it is. A TERRIBLE contract.

They also get 50% of her publishing and 30% of the tour money. And all touring expenses come out of her share:picard:

Yea I genuinely hope she gets out of that deal. She shouldn’t have signed it in the first place (or her mother) But I hope she gets a second chance at a fair deal and other younger artists wise up and tale this entire fiasco as a lesson in knowing what you are signing

Terrible contract or not. It was reviewed and signed. I wouldn't let her out of it without a significant buyout.

The contract has been looked at by various media outlets dude, the jig is up. She didn't get a 60/40 split and she doesn't own any of her masters, which is why she couldn't release anything. Why should I believe Wayno when the guy who signed her is lying about shyt we can verify?

It's a typical rap slave deal. His hope was that she'd blow up and he could negotiate a buy out where he sells her to a major label in exchange for a percentage on future sales+up front cash. That's how these dudes roll.
