Exactly. Same stats when Melo should have much better stats because he has less around him. Spurs spread it around and have plenty of options.

That's not sound logic for basketball. I would say it's more the equivalent of a reverse bell curve for how team quality would affect a player's individual stats. His team isn't bad enough for him to dominate all the stat lines like you imply . It's just good enough for him to have to rely on his team to do something and it's just bad enough for teams to be able to focus on him and not worry too much about others. That's why whenever one of the other players on the team have big games, they usually win.

If Melo didn't get hurt last year, I would have expected him to get those gaudy numbers that you're expecting now... that team was terrible.

And theres 2 or 3 stats that say hes been great

And defensive rating has already been exposed as the 1 of the most misleading stat in basketball

I don't like team stats that are targeted at one player. I mean when you're playing with the likes of Vujacic and Calderon in the starting lineup for the first several games, everybody in that lineup is going to be negatively affected. Also, whether your team in general is good or bad is going to affect those numbers. Starting players on average teams are generally going to have worse plus-minus numbers considering they're losing more.

I prefer one on one stats. But hey... to each his own I guess.

One is ascending the other seems to be descending as an elite player. One is his teams number 1 option but he shares the ball with 3 other Hall of Famers and an All Star big man. One shoots a high percentage from the field while being the best or one of the best defenders in the league. That's why Kawhi is an MVP candidate and Melo isn't.

So you gave us 1 stat where guys aren't making 3s against Melo this season, and now all the stats say he's a good defender? There's 2 stats that say he's still below average.

I posted the article with "stats" moreso because they acknowledged that melo has improved as a defender. To show the problem with using stats as an argument, I'll use 2 key points.

1) plus minus and your other stat at the end of the day is a very team oriented stat. There's literally no way possible to gauge this without it being based on the team

2) per the stats that you just used, melo is a better defender than paul george, iguodala, ariza and essentially equal to tony allen and sefolosha. Obviously these guys are better defenders, but the fact that statistically he's even similar should indicate how much better he's actually been playing

Good player but over hyped. Benefits from being on the Spurs.

Replace Kawhi with Melo and Spurs still have same record or even better.:russell:
