I'd argue that even with MTV there were just a lot more barriers that aren't there now. Rap didn't become the highest selling genre until 98. I remember the days when a lot of rap was foreign to white people and there were white kids are my school listening to metallica, while me and my nikkaz were listening to the mobb deep.
