It was never about competition throughout the league. It was predicated on competition between the best teams in major markets “rivals” or “heavyweights” Occasionally you have a Cinderella team sneak in like the 04 Pistons or a small market team hits the lotto like the 97 Spurs but outside of these once every 10 year flash in the pan moments.... nah its about ratings and revenue
What you’re seeing now is new major markets being developed and old irrelevant markets being strengthened. For instance, Miami brings in Pat Riley who has the clout to re-tool an irrelevant basketball franchise that has the potential to be a major franchise. If KD does to Washington and teams up with John Wall and Bradley Beal you have an irrelevant franchise become a contender.
It’s always been more about bomb squad and generating revenue than basic competition.
