I don't know how to really describe that situation in the OP. Maybe I ain't understanding due to nvm...
I don't think having sex with a friend means there is no friendship. It can't be the prime motivation, though.
The issue is that when you do get in the relationship, the other person has to know their boundaries, fall back and even expect to be removed from that person's life. Some can't handle that and some don't have the discipline to remove said friend.
