I don't think having sex with a friend means there is no friendship. It can't be the prime motivation, though.

The issue is that when you do get in the relationship, the other person has to know their boundaries, fall back and even expect to be removed from that person's life. Some can't handle that and some don't have the discipline to remove said friend.

Sir you explained it better than I could try to explain. I would say that just because you get in a relationship doesn't mean someone should drop their friends altogether. In that particular situation in the OP though, I think the bold has to be applied because the two parties already went there.
