eh youre oversimplifying one of my favorite books breh...it wasnt like he was trying to get p*ssy from his daughters by spending money...theyre his fukking children and he loved them to death.

its more of a ungratefulness to your parents theme...they dont even show up to his funeral

yeah you could say that, but i think from griot's view point the overall idea was that you can't buy love and affection, even from people that are your blood. like there was a line he said right before he died and he talked about how he shouldn't have did what he did for them. i don't know, that line struck a nerve with me out of all the lines because it was the first time in the whole book he actually sort of "cursed" his daughters and their attitude towards him. everything before that, he always was overly concerned about their condition and turned them into victims so, even more so, if it's some girl that you want, or even if you don't really care about her so much, that type of attitude will backfire on you.

on a side note, i'm happy someone else has read this book. it's an excellent read and full of quotables for days...

honestly, goriot was a fukkin saint. he wasnt trying to buy love or affection...he lived like a bum and died in poverty because he spent his last money so his daughters could live like upper class women they were before and be happy with their lives. thats almost an ultimate self-sacrifice to me. very different from trying to basically buy p*ssy from a girl you feelin....

and the reason why he 'cursed them out' is that he understood that by him not caring enough about himself and only about them, he spoiled them. he raised people who werent good and who didnt know anything about love and affection.

to me the biggest reason why I love that book is cuz rastignac is a smart dude and he sees goriot- a saint- die and shat on by society and his own kin after being a saint. and so rastignac vows to exploit this society by playing their own game.

later on in other balzacs books he more or less becomes like the rest of society even though he is technically smart enough to know hes above them...

Yeah alot of these kids see prostitution as evil. In the other thread I discussed possibly opening a brothel in South America. You can imagine how some of the replies were like.
