As an adult pushing 30, critically analyzing films from my childhood has become a new found hobbie. I rewatched Menace II Society recently and was able to get some deeper meaning. Watching for symbolism and other cinematic devices can be rewarding.
Take the scene below for example. The grandparents home throughout the movie is used to represent the Church, religion, and its disconnect with the youth (particularly young black males.) Odogs hesitancy to walk in, the message falling on deaf ears, the images of white Jesus and the last supper plastered around the home.. The condescending paternal tone adopted my grandpa all encompass this theme. It is also ironic that both Kane and O wear crucifixes around their neck throughout the film.
Also, notice Grandpa never leaves his front step when he follows Kane outside and asks if he cares about living. Madness all around, but the Church won't actually hit the streets to reach the youth. This has long been the reputation of the black Church.
