In a civil case, the accused (defendant) has to win over the jury. It really comes down to how much you can influence the jury with your argument/evidence. The winner gets compensation (money, assets, etc).

In a criminal case the defendant is basically going against the government. The defendant is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty “without a shadow of a doubt” yet the prosecutor has much more reach and governmental power to flex.

Edit: in this case, that’s why the plaintiff (accuser) is appealing. Her party believes the jury and judge were in cohorts with Rose because they took pictures with him after the ruling
