I guess imma have to look around my damn self
I just don't see myself playing the entire series just to get to this one.
To get into and to understand TPP, play MGS3, Peace Walker, and Ground Zeroes (free at the moment on psn+). If you can't play them (but I strongly recommend you do play them ALL and the others in release order), look those games up on the metal gear wiki.

Edit: MGS 1, 2, and 4 could be skipped since they could be spoilers to MGSV. I'm not sure if you played Ground Zeroes yet but if you did, you might find that the controls in the previous games feel like ass.

Never played a Metal gear game. What am i missing?
A lot. You missed out on some iconic shyt, breh. Are you into stealth games ? If you are I'm not sure how you didn't notice the entire mgs series.
Ground Zeroes is free on PS+ right now, if you're interested in Phantom Pain you should try it out.
If you don't like it then series may not be for you, since imo the gameplay and controls are at its best there.

you missed out on some good gameplay and very memorable stories and characters. Don't sweat it though, imo there's never been a better time to jump into the series. The gameplay of GZ and 5 is so much better than the previous games. Like StoicGhost said, cop GZ on PSN+ for free and check it out.
After MGS4 I'm taking a wait and see approach to this game. I need confirmation that there is more game than movie this time.
You'll be glad to hear that there's less cutscenes this time around. Story is more "systematic", where you'll be getting it through codec convos and you can flesh it out by collecting cassettes.
Good news to me but some at Neogaf are already crying about the decision.

I also think MGSV Mother Base is gonna change the game when it comes to video games with base of operation/war tables. Sounds pretty deep
