That fat fuk Roger Ebert had no idea what his old ass was talking about when he said video games weren't art or on the same level as films.

These stories are on par with films such as Shawshank Redemption, Citizen Cane, Blade Runner etc....

MGS3's storyline + all the other games in the series >>>>> Shawshank Redemption

Mafia I and II's storyline are equally as good as Casino/Goodfellas imo.

Lets just keep it all the way funky and be honest.

when my father saw me playing sleeping dogs the other day, he said it reminded him of movies. the storylines have gotten so good in games, it really does seem like they could be big budget or critically acclaimed pieces of cinema. i'll always take a great single player story over some online multiplayer tho, thats for sure...

maybe The Last of Us but sure as hell not Heavy Rain and Metal Gear Solid 3. The storytelling in video games doesn't compare to the storytelling in movies which is why as you've probably noticed almost all video games fail as movies.

Tlou could be a very good series but no way should any of those others be mentioned. Heavy rain would be a cookie cutter episode of law and order at best. Mass effect and god of war could translate but that's only with good writers and a huge budget.

bad analogy.

a great video game has no business being a movie anyway, why go to another medium when u can do so much more with the current one?

Last of Us wouldn't need a movie because the game is a movie itself, same goes for Heavy Rain/MGS3 etc....

while we're on the subject of sh1t being better than films

TV >>>>> Films also.

Sopranos as a complete series >>>> every mafia flick. Films are overrated breh, its only so much u can do with 2 hours.

interactive storytelling doesn't have to be as good as just plain storytelling in a movie because its interactive.

your life probably isn't as exciting as a big budget Hollywood blockbuster but you're living it so it doesn't have to be. in the same token you probably aren't gonna be interested in watching a movie that's just a day in the life of an average ordinary person as they get up take a shower and go to work come home eat dinner and watch tv then go to bed and all that.

a story being told to you has to be far better than a story you live and experience.

a game like Metal Gear is cheesy as hell and very over the top but its ok because it has gameplay to hold your attention. without that gameplay that's fun nobody would really wanna sit and watch all those cutscenes. hell even with the gameplay people complain about them.

then why do they keep making video game based movies or at least trying to?

the story telling and writing in The Last of Us is actually good enough to chop out the gameplay and just have it be a movie. it could stand on its story alone but in the video game world that's a very rare thing. in part because we just reached a tech level in the last 15 years or so where games can be cinematic enough to do that and in part because many of these game developers are amateur script and story writers at best and they can fall back on gameplay as a crutch to prop their writing abilities up.

gameplay + writing is why video games >>>> films

Being involved in something >>>> just standing on the outside watching.

The sopranos is the exception rather than the norm. And in no way does it hold a candle to the godfather series. Serialized tv is not very comparable to movies of the same genre. For example, you have hannibal the series and say silence of the lambs. They both tell a similar story about a serial killer but in between plot points you have filler, you don't need that with films, plus much better acting in general in movies. some shows are better as shows and most movies are better as movies. If the sopranos was a movie it would be terrible, where as I think the godfather is great as is.
