Report: Heat, Grizzlies swap four in Chalmers-Udrih trade: 10 things
The
Memphis Grizzlies have been spiraling and despite an impressive effort vs. the Clippers in a close loss Monday, they've decided to shake up the roster, and Yahoo! Sports reports they've agreed to a deal with the
Miami Heat. The Grizzlies will send
Beno Udrihand big man prospect
Jarnell Stokes to Miami for
Mario Chalmers and
James Ennis. The salaries don't match, so it's likely Memphis will need to include their trade exception from the Jon Leuer trade to make this work financially.
Here's what you need to know:
1. What Memphis is getting in Chalmers. The deal was basically made by Memphis to get some time relief for
Mike Conley while adding what I can only describe is a theoretical shooter. Chalmers is a career 36 percent shooter from the outside, but last year shot just 29 percent from the perimeter and this year is shooting a very crisp 9.1 percent from the outside. Here's his shot chart from last season:
So yeah, he's more of a "theoretical" shooter than an actual shooter, but that right-side corner 3-point shot is an important one that has been missing for Memphis. It's weird to give up on Udrih, who was really good for the Grizzlies last season and in the playoffs, but clearly they felt they needed better defense with the reserve units.
2. Miami adds solid replacement backups. Udrih can slide into the third point guard slot, and the Heat also get a still-promising big man in Jarnell Stokes if they choose to hang onto him. Stokes was unable to crack the rotation, losing minutes to journeyman JaMaychal Green.
3. Heat also save some money. Miami sloughs off about $6 million in tax payments with this deal,
per Bobby Marks.
4. Don't expect warm welcome for Rio. Chlamers will likely receive a rousing welcome the first time he checks in for the Grizzlies in Memphis, considering this is how most Memphis fans remember him:
He's going to get booed in his first game traded to a new team. So that will be fun.
5. Will Ennis earn enough court time? Ennis exploded out of the gate last year before tailing off. He's a high energy, athletic forward, so the fans will inevitably love him while he struggles to find minutes because Dave Joerger is allergic to playing guys under the age of 27.
6. Memphis gets a scapegoat. Everyone will get to yell at Chalmers and maybe that will solve the Grizzlies' malaise this season:
7. Miami finally rids itself of Chalmers. The Heat could afford to make this move and they've been looking for a way out of Chalmers' deal for the past two seasons. He was basically involved in trade rumors every year since re-signing with the Heat after the formation of the Triad in 2010 with LeBron James,
Chris Bosh, and
Dwyane Wade. Wade has often spoken of Chalmers as a little brother, but it'll be interesting to hear his comments about him now.
8. Do Chalmers, Ennis have future in Memphis? Per Basketball Insiders, Ennis is non-guaranteed at just over $800,000 while Chalmers is
in the last year of his contract at $4.3 million. This could be part of a larger plan for Memphis to a. try and swing bigger moves or b. cut salary in the event that the team continues to fall into disarray and misery. Either is possible with owner Robert Pera.
9. Grizzlies stacked at power forward. If the Grizzlies don't waive Ennis, he can fill in under the event that they decide to move
Jeff Green. As it stands they're pretty log-jammed at the position.
10. More court time for Tyler Johnson. This opens up more backcourt minutes for Johnson in Miami, who has played tremendously well as a reserve the past two years for the Heat.
