Gang violence...
This shows you how out of touch a lot of these billionaire elites really are. Elon Musk is by no means dumb but this move seems to lack tremendous foresight. Unless he knows something outside the consensus of climate scientists. Much of Miami will be under water in a few decades or so. The idea of building an underground tunnel there is almost laughable.

I agree that the price seems somewhat low, but also no one is acknowledging the original quote was ridiculously high.

And why is that high and why didn't anyone pick up on it?

See everyone here knows that 300 million + 600 Million is 900 million.
We all know the math, humans are basically good with math, but we suck at scale.
We know and understand the math, but we don't really know what 900million is and how much it is.

It is because of this that we see humongous price tags from govt

Incentive is the short answer.

Anyone living in south Florida can tell you about the bs that is the construction on the Palmetto, and how that's been going on for decades.

many men have lived well off the tangential expenses tied into the budget for different phases of the construction, because the incentives lie in that place.

So Elon is talking $30M; since the project is being done within the city, the county becomes involved with the staging of the machinery, possibly at PortMiami, maybe near the airport. Historical society gets involved, due to the Tequesta Circle, the church on Brickell Drive, and other historical sites in the tunnel's proposed path. Factor in events at AAArena, events in general, in a short dense area, and start asking how much would be needed to placate each person or people in charge to get this going, and add that to the budget, and add the proposed time scale, and that $30M becomes $100M on the short end.

also, taking a look at the area in terms of citizen displacement, if they go through with this, guarantee it's going through overtown, and on the brickell end, there'll be minimal interference done to the Icon.

So everyone responding with their opinion but no one bringing up the Boring tunnels in Las Vegas :jbhmm:
I did a little research, though it's not easy to get specific details, but here's what I found:

* The Vegas tunnel cost over $50 million even though it appears to be less than half-a-mile long. That was original cost projections as of last year, I haven't seen whether there have been cost overruns or not.

* The two tunnels are each just 14 feet wide and only handle a single track each.

* The tunnel was logistically simple as it was just from one end of the Convention Center to the other.

* The tunnel was originally supposed to open to the public in January 2021. Musk claimed last year that coronavirus restrictions were not affecting the timetable, but from what I can tell the tunnel is still in testing and has not opened. However, Musk has also suggested that he's just waiting for enough opening of covid restrictions to be allowed to throw a big opening party, so its tough to tell whether it's ready or not.

* The entire benefit of the tunnel appears to be that people will no longer have to walk 15 minutes to get to the other end of the convention center. Instead they will ride a car for 2 minutes.

So the upshot is they paid Musk over $50 million to ramp up energy use even more and ensure fat Americans get that much less exercise. :unimpressed:
