An album isn't classic due to the fame of it, it's about the quality of the music. Mega has a solid fan base. By that criteria we could say a lot of classic albums weren't because they weren't mainstream.

That's why I have categories like "cult classic" "personal classics" "regional classics" and straight up "universal hip hop classics"


I personally feel like there are less than 50 "universal hip hop classics" in the 40 year history of the culture total.. Everything else falls into one of those other categories..I don't think you can put Cormega albums in the same category as Ready To Die, The Chronic or Aquemini when it comes to classics.. Because influence has to play a part in that.. You can't just make good music for your core fan base...

There has to be some minimum threshold though - Mega clearly meets the standard.

Who is the arbitrator of the minimum threshold?

Do we need Sway and his roundtable to settle this?

The last 4.5 mic album was R.A.P. Music


Everything else has been either wack ,average to above average....Nothing really excellent or perfect in the past decade.. College Dropout was 4.5 or 5...


I just don't throw out superlatives all willy- nilly like that..

Yeah - but to take what you are saying to the limits of logic - that would mean I could record an album - never play it for anyone - and it still be a classic.

I believe you could do that. It would just be an unheard classic.

But when you say that I feel the same, just different views, cause GKMC isn't nowhere near a 5 mic album to me. And R.A.P Music wasn't a 4.5 to me, though it had some joints.

Mega is WAY past the minimum threshold, even though no such thing exists. We're talking about him worldwide now, he isn't on Combat Jack, hasn't sold 100's of thousands of records, working with Premier, Pete Rock, Large Pro, Alc etc cause nobody knows him lol. His album is featuring AZ, Redman, Raekwon, Styles P etc. This doesn't even make sense lol. He's worked with Nas, Foxy Brown, Big Pun, Tragedy Khadafi, CNN, mad people. He isn't a complete unknown so the debate isn't even relevant.

No, because classic to me means of the highest standard, not the most heard.

I feel the same but i'd also add mbdtf.



mbdtf and gkmc are probably the only albums of the last 5 years where both the critics and the majority of rap fans agree on their rating ( + 9/10)
