Lot of people don't know this. When puberty kicked in and the dog whisper voice started it was mainly because he didn't want to "shave" the high notes out of his range by allowing his register to deepen as his vocal cords widened so he learned how to hold his throat muscles in a certain way to still be able to hit 4 octaves. He feared that if he lost that childs tone his career was over and after a while just ran with the gimmick because a) it made him seem innocent/non threatening b) it got people talking about him and c) he could still hit the notes he wanted.
