Michael Jordan Donates Cash From His Multi-Million Dollar Settlement to 23 Chicago Charities

POSTED Dec 15, 2015 - 12 minutes ago

by Brendan Dunne

Michael Jordan donated millions of dollars to Chicago charities on Tuesday, delivering on his earlier promise to put the settlement he won in a lawsuit against grocery stores Dominick's and Jewel-Osco to good use, according to his advisers.

The Chicago Tribune reports that organizations including Chicago Scholars, Chicago Youth Programs and Children's Literacy Initiative were recipients of the donations.

Jordan said this summer that he would donate the money from his $8.9 million settlement. He's donating the net proceeds, but even after paying his attorneys for the six-year legal battle, there were still millions of dollars leftover, according to the Tribune's sources.

Jordan hopes that his donations will support the well-being of Chicago's youth.

"I care deeply about the city of Chicago and have such incredible memories from my years there," Jordan said via a release. "The 23 charities I've chosen to make donations to all support the health, education and well-being of the kids of Chicago. Chicago has given me so much and I want to give back to its kids — the city's future."
