I'd personally put The Grand Budapest Hotel and Whiplash ahead of Birdman, but it's certainly deserving. Haven't seen Boyhood yet but can't imagine it should be a serious contender for Best Picture.
Its a very linear story, nothing really jumps at you, but the filming process trick of the 12 years thing has the DGA creaming their pants...
And yes, both Grand Budapest and Whiplash are better films than Boyhood too
You gotta take it for what it is.
Not every movie has to have car chases and explosions.
