He went to some camp and put on 25 pounds of muscle and is now a special teams player for the Bears. That's seriousness about being in the league that I'm speaking on that Sam isn't displaying.

That's kinda what this is getting at. He knew he was fringe talent at best and probably wouldn't stick. If he hadnt announced he was gay he'd just be another one of those guys who was good in college but too small or just not good enough for a higher level. Coming out has kept him relevant and brought him a lot of opportunities he would not have had otherwise.
