How do you think Michael felt when he got his wake up call and realized he would never be accepted by WASP/Anglo society? He probably married Kay because she was a WASP.

His true love was Apolonia, I think the ONLY reason he went back to Kay is because she knew him and he probably didn't feel like bothering with another woman.

As for the Senator, I think Mike's been disillusioned with the establishment ever since that cop broke his jaw in GF1. I'm pretty sure being as calculated as he was that almost nothing can take him by surprise (except for Kay getting the abortion and Fredo's betrayal).

The Senator was just EXTRA with his disrespect, so Mike got EXTRA in return.

One of if not my favorite scene in the movie. Mike being so positive he was going to come out on top is the definition of gangster.
Mike always knew what time it was with WASPs he just married Kay because of familiarity. His first instinct was right, get a real Italian woman down for the lifestyle. He should have tried that again. But before his Dad got shot and he didn't want to be a part of the family business he genuinely loved her but when he changed his mind they were no longer compatible.
