It depends on your jurisdiction.

Through a bunch of legal motions you could effectively stay in your house for an entire year without paying rent on a lot of blue states due to strong renters rights. 5000 a month is totally doable in LA for rent.


This is another reason why they're so hard on credit scores in blue states when renting out properties. In red States they can have you gone by the end of the month, and have somebody else in so they're willing to take risks on people with shaky credit profiles. The renter friendly policies are intended to help people but they actually harm people long term, because they force landlords to be conservative in who they let live in their properties
