Microsoft has acquired Smash.gg

Smash.gg has been officially acquired by Microsoft. The announcement was made over on their website, with a quick banner providing light details on the deal.

While some might be wondering if there will be any kind of exclusivity with this newfound acquisition, Smash.gg has stated that it will continue to run as a self-service eSports platform that will be available to all gaming communities.



"Today, we're excited to announce that Microsoft has acquired Smash.gg!" the official Smash.gg Twitter account wrote. "With this acquisition, the Smash.gg community and tournament organizers will continue to benefit from the Smash.gg platform, while our team will now benefit from additional resources and support as part of the Microsoft Content Services team."

In terms of immediate changes, the service isn't expected to see drastic ones on the surface as the newly combined team will continue doing what Smash.gg does best.

Smash.gg is a free software that allows users to create and organize both online and offline events. It provides bracket and registration functionality, giving tournament organizers the ability to gather entrants and keep track of the progression of their events.

While the service has "Smash" in the name, it hosts events spanning across many different games including Street Fighter 5, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and even games outside of the fighting game community such as Fortnite and Rocket League.

At the time of writing this, Smash.gg is also hosting the official Capcom Cup 2020 community vote that will decide the final entrant for the event.

Smash.gg has been the standard for FGC tournaments for quite a while now, and with Microsoft's backing this will undoubtedly open up even more doors for the service and for eSports.
