Microsoft rebrands Xbox Music to Groove

Microsoft killed off the Xbox Music branding in its music and video apps for Windows 10, but today the company is rebranding the entire service to Groove. In a blog post detailing the changes, Microsoft's reasoning for the new name appears to be because "Groove describes what people feel and do with music." Groove will be largely the same as Xbox Music, but Microsoft is planning to update it regularly in the coming months. At launch, alongside Windows 10 later this month, the Groove app will work in both light and dark themes with features that are currently in the Windows 10 preview.

"Groove describes what people feel and do with music."

While there's no free streaming version of Groove, following the end of Microsoft's free music streaming last year, the company is pitching this updated service to those with big collections of MP3s. Groove will support the ability to upload music to Microsoft's OneDrive cloud storage service and access the songs for free from Windows devices, Xbox consoles, and Android or iPhone handsets. Like Xbox Music before it, there's also a subscription service for $9.99 a month or $99 year that provides access to stream and download music from the Windows Store.

"Xbox Video branding is also going away"

Alongside the Groove rebrand, Xbox Video is also getting a new name. In Windows 10 the app will simply be called Movies & TV, with access to download TV and movies or import personal collections. You can rent or buy movies and TV shows, and they'll be available on all Windows 10 devices and Xbox consoles, but there doesn't appear to be plans to extend this to Android and iOS devices just yet.

Microsoft says "Windows Insiders who are a part of the Fast ring and upgrade to the next PC build will see these updates," which suggests that a new build will be made available to testers ahead of the Windows 10 release on July 29th. Microsoft is planning to finalize Windows 10 this week, and the company is currently putting the finishing touches to the OS before it starts regularly updating it over the coming months.

Update, 3:50PM July 6th: Microsoft mistakenly referred to Groove as Groove Music in its announcement. The company says it's simply Groove and is working to correct its mistake. This article has been updated to reflect the correct name.

:ehh:I always thought changing the name of Zune to Xbox Music was STUPID AF.
this is just Microsoft fixing their mistakes.

they kept trying to push the Xbox as an entertainment brand, when in reality it is a popular gaming brand. The whole push was dumb as fukk. They were trying to unnecessarily push the Xbox brand because it's really the only successful hardware line they have ever made.

remember when they were trying to push out original video content? :snoop:

You talk, but you haven't seen anything they produced have you. You can stop acting like you have
Today I saw the Atari landfill documentary on showtime. It was actually good :manny:
Before watching that today, I basically wrote it off like everyone else. It was a high quality show
What M$ has done wrong is how they presented the shows. Thew was acting like we might have to pay to watch
They needed to establish a bunch of shows for free, then once the service took off. They could add pay content
Basically making their own version of Netflix, just bigger. It will come, no need to hate because they decided to recalibrate their approach...

Its already happening, they was just trying to be too innovative. Not even that, they got blindsided by the fanboy backlash on XB1 in general. So pushing this idea when they wasn't selling as fast as they hoped. It makes sense to put this on hold. But if you think they won't continue to make original content from a media standpoint. Halo 5 and Quantum Break are just the beginning of the fusion.

And just like how Netflix is getting its own content, Microsoft will have its own platform that spans across PC/XB/Phone. And that platform will have its own shows. Have you forgotten what the XB1 is bruh?
IT needs its "itunes" since its the ultimate device. Windows 10 will be here in a few weeks

I don't see anything competing with netflix in the foreseeable future. It'll be a niche service but I don't even see it competing with hulu or amazon honestly.

If WIndows 10 is as great as people say it is? And its cross compatible like its supposed to be?
I don't see why it wouldn't work, its ecosystem is huge

put the crack pipe down breh, it will take many years for another video service to even come close to competing with Netflix. They have HBO and Showtime scrambling as it is and Microsoft is nowhere near those 2.

They had a hand in developing Humans, which surprised me so it wasn't all bad

The XBOX branding was hilariously stupid. Zune was a good fit and still would be. Good to see the ship steering in the right direction with refinements.

I've been on there about 10 years and only had an xbox for about 4 months out of that entire time. Had a Zune way back in the day that is still kicking and I have a Surface RT so it's incredibly convenient for me.

They were ahead of their time on that subscription stuff. Nobody was really thinking about that back then
