Microsoft reveals how it’s improving visual detail on Xbox One and Windows 8.1 | GamesBeat

Microsoft revealed a new feature for DirectX 11.2 and Windows 8.1 today called “tiled resources” that enables a graphics card to display a huge amount of detail without overwhelming it with memory-intensive textures.

Tiled resources automatically swaps in the details whenever a gamer is looking closely at it. This should enable developers to pack in tons of lifelike textures. This functionality is only available on Windows 8.1 and next-gen consoles.

“The motivation for doing something like this is to enable you to make games with unprecedented amounts of detail,” Microsoft vice president of Windows Antoine Leblond said in a presentation at the company’s Build conference today in San Francisco.

Leblond demonstrated this technology using a map of Mars that was blurry whenever he zoomed into the landscape. He then turned on tiled resources, which made the minutiae of the surface of Mars pop with crispness.

In a different demo, Leblond zoomed in on a glider to show its rivets and dirt smudges.

This feature should improve visual performance on any PC running Windows 8.1, and it is something developers will have access to on Xbox One.

Special sauce?:mjpls:

nikkaz trying to use bullshyt to compensate for them putting cheap ass DDR3 in their shyt.

NOPE, still doesn't match GDDR5 ram.

And by the way, MS credibility is cooked. No one believing their :duck: no more except Xbots.

Ps3 had superior hardware and no one cared. It doesn't matter : beli:

Not my words, but the following info was shared(neogaf) and no this isn't secret sauce.

This is already a feature of the AMD GCN architecture used in Xbone and PS4. AMD refers to it as Partially Resident Textures (PRT) and claims texture sizes up to 32TB. OpenGL already has support for this through an AMD extension. So both Xbone and PS4 will have this feature.

It is, just now Windows 8.1/DX11.1 fully supports it where as Windows 7-8 didn't nor did DX10 & 11. Really wouldn't matter for PS4 anyway since it's neither running on Windows nor is it using DX11. It's why Carmack despite loving AMD's PRT in GCN didn't utilize it for RAGE. He couldn't really.

why would they need that when they have the Clooouuudddddd :blessed:

You dont know how the cloud works do you?

Anyway, like I say all the time, there will not be a big advantage when it comes to these systems graphically. Specs say one thing but architecture says a lot more. Same reason why you have 6 cylinder japanese cars outperforming 8 cylinder cars all the time. Numbers don't equal performance. That why these spec wars make me laugh.

Come on rekka you you should know better than to just spout off ram specs if you're a tech guy. The way it talks ti the gpu and cpu mean a lot more than just gddr5 vs ddr3. I haven't said much about it because it's hilarious to watch fanboys speak about it when they obviously just saw a sheet and some neogaf rumors. Not necessarily you but it's obvious people just say oooo we got such and such but have no idea how it works in relation to the rest of the system. Gddr5 vs ddr3 is a dumb argument because all most people can say is that it's faster. The real question is how efficient is it, how does the ps4 use it in conjunction with the gpu vs cpu. How many simultaneous processes does it handle with the way it's integrated into the system. The answer is we don't know for either system. You can shoehorn as much ram,as you want in a system but if it isnt efficient it's the equivalent of gacing a v8 in a truck vs a v8 in a sports car both are equally effective just in different ways.
