Today we're excited to announce that Microsoft Studios has acquired the rights to the “Gears of War” franchise from Epic Games, including rights to all existing and future games, entertainment experiences and merchandise. In addition, we are excited to announce that Black Tusk Studios in Vancouver, BC will take over development of the “Gears of War” franchise and that Rod Fergusson, former Director of Production at Epic Games on the “Gears of War” franchise, will join Microsoft and play a key studio leadership role at Black Tusk on the development of the franchise going forward. We had a chance to chat with Phil Spencer, Head of Microsoft Studios, Hanno Lemke, General Manager of Black Tusk Studios at Microsoft Studios, and Rod Fergusson about the big news.

Question: The developers who made the first 3 gears games, they werent the same ones who made the 4th one were they? Wasn't there some change in management?

I played/own the first 3 but didn't bother picking up the last one where they were tryna push baird (sp?) as the lead

If I remember Cliffy B was gone after Gears 3 as well as Fergusson. They used the company People Can Fly for development of Gears Judgment. It was a pretty big change in the feel of the game.

Ok, so basically that 'people can fly' team got the boot for this black tusk group, and fergusson is back to oversee/consult them on the project? :ehh:

I'm guessing so, I haven't checked the Epic Games forums (They're basically going under at this point) yet about all of this yet. I know People Can Fly is under Epic for the most part and due to this switch you're basically right.

I'm curious as to how this will work without Cliffy B, I heard about him not too pleased with the direction Judgment took.
