I actually wouldn't be surprised if migos end up hurting financially in the future since the group has been on a downwards spiral for a lil minute now and evidently didn't have good people on their side.
It's a shame what we do to some of our in the name of greed. You would think that since migos basically elevated QC by themselves that they would get what they deserved.
But then you look at yachty and see he's selling his clothes now. Had to dress up as a woman and get mocked by his peers (check his vlogs from the Oprah bank account vid and count the rappers making jabs at him - even drake straight up shook his head and told him 'the things we'll do for money' in front of coach k.) just for the video and album to basically flop
50 Cent to Receive $14.5 Million in Legal Malpractice SuitWho did 50 sue, his lawyer was screwing him over?
They're not going to listen to you. Fact of the matter is these are 16-21 year old, drugged up, high school dropouts signing these deals. No matter how hard you try they not caring about what "conflict of interest" even means. We need to stop shytting on the victims for being victims and start looking at the perpetrators for being predators. Those victims will always be there. If they turned down the deal then there'd be 10 more groups eager to sign even worse deals.
Case in point Taylor Swift's pops had enough money to buy some ownership in Big Machine when she signed her first deal. Fast forward a decade later and 100s of millions of records sold and she still doesn't even have her masters and claims they owe her unpaid royalties. If someone with that kind of privilege can get got then Migos never stood a chance.
For sure, I'm not really blaming migos. Mainly QC and them for taking advantage.
I'm never really upset at young nikkas signing deals if it puts them in a better place and position. I will be vocal about them moving better in hopes of encouragement but like I said earlier, blame really falls at the foot of black people taking advantage of the same young black people that really put their label on.
Thing is there is nothing wrong with signing the deal, the issue is not reading the deal being signed. NBA Young boy posted on social media that he offered to do the last four albums on his contract for free so he could have his masters, and the label said no. I’m inclined to believe that not having his master was part of the deal and written in the small print.
Isn’t Jay-Z still mad that he doesn’t have his masters for reasonable doubt?
I get the excitement of signing a deal that will change lives but there has to be an uncle/cousin/auntie/grandparent or somebody around to say “read the contract “
Despite what people and rappers may think, most artists don't get to own their masters and getting them definitely isn't automatic. It wouldn't make business sense for the label to make that a common practice. Publishing is the one thing that artist shouldn't sign away. And if they do, it should be a deal where it reverts back to the artist after a certain amount of time.
You have to have insane leverage and be willing to not take large advances to even think about getting your masters when dealing with a major label. That or buy them back for a large amount.
And nah, Jay owns all his masters but he splits ownership of Reasonable Doubt three ways with Biggs & Dame.
This.It is unreasonable.
You're supposed to have a separation and your lawyer is supposed to protect your interest, not the labels. Something the lawyers won't do when they're being paid by the label and the same label is also your management team.
Entertainment lawyers aren't hard to find. This is just a common tactic that labels use on people that don't know better, just like them acting like your label should also be your management, your publisher, etc.
