Pat Shurmur has finally found an offensive coordinator to add to his first Giants coaching staff. He will hire Mike Shula, who has an extensive NFL resume on the offensive side of the ball.

The hiring will be made official later on Tuesday.

Shula, 52, will also serve as the quarterbacks coach for the Giants, so this fills the two remaining spots on Shurmur’s staff. Shula, the son of Hall of Fame coach Don Shula, was most recently with the Panthers, serving as Ron Rivera’s offensive coordinator the past five years. In that role, Mike Shula got to know and work with Dave Gettleman, then the general manager in Charlotte. Gettleman is now the Giants’ general manager and no doubt gave his endorsement for this hiring.

Shula is not Shurmur’s first choice. He wanted to hire Kevin Stefanski, the Vikings quarterbacks coach, but the Vikings refused permission. Shurmur also had interest in Duce Staley, the Eagles’ running backs coach.

Shula was the head coach at Alabama, his alma-mater, form 2003 through 2006. He has also run the offense for the Buccaneers and coached quarterbacks for the Dolphins, Jaguars and Panthers. Shula was fired by the Panthers following this past season.

With the Giants, Shula will not be the play-caller on offense, as Shurmur will handle the dual role of head coach and offensive play-caller. Shula will put together the offensive game plans. He inherits Eli Manning, the 37-year old franchise quarterback, and Davis Webb, the 2017 third-round pick entering his second NFL season. The Giants are likely to select a quarterback with the No. 2 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, and if that is the case, Shula will be responsible for the development of the rookie prospect.

Mike Shula has “an extensive NFL resume” on the strength of his father’s accomplishments.

This guy hasn’t earned an NFL job, ever.

The Giants are going nowhere fast.

It’s Shurmur’s offense and he’s calling the plays.

I’m not thrilled about trusting Shula to develop a QB, given how much work most of the top ones this year need, but we’ll see.
