You're missing the point.
1. Miley called Jay pop music to get in cool with the rock audience, who are notorious for loathing pop music. She at the time claimed to only listen to acts like Radiohead, etc. Now she's done a 180. Why? Because she was completely rejected.
2. Timberlake was not a Disney artist. NSYNC was signed to Jive. There are interviews and videos of him singing or talking about R&B songs. NSYNC opened up for Janet Jackson's Velvet Rope tour in 1997 and sang an acapella duet to Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed".
The first song he co-wrote on their second album featuring Teddy Pendergrass. The album also features a cover of Johnny Kemp's Just Got Paid, and a rap verse from Left Eye.
