He doesn't want to pay the BLM because the BLM drove his friends out of business. If the government regulated me out of my method of living off the land, it'd be justifiably furious. It's a common and all too tragic sociological occurrence. Hell, what aren't more people mad about THAT?

So why doesn't he leave?

Okay well its my land too since I'm paying for it and I want his cattle off of it..there

I genuinely doubt that any tax dollar of yours goes toward paying for Cliven Bundy's land. The fact that he doesn't pay his BLM fees doesn't mean YOU do. But fine, allow me to explain to you why you should be sympathetic.

The Bundy family was ranching in southern Nevada before the Bureau of Land Management ever existed. Bundy's family and others like it were ENTICED to come to Nevada with promises that they could graze their cattle on adjacent government land. Sounds good right? Wrong. Over the past several decades, the BLM has been bullying and intimidating ranchers to fill their pockets. The gov't owns 80% of Nevada (and the percentage is similar in many western states). They threaten and intimidate farmers into paying exorbitant fees and granting easements by saying they won't renew their grazing licenses. They look to make money off the land in any way possible -- highways, military contractors, whatever suits them. They paid these ranchers to manage the land, and then proceeded to fukk them over in any way possible.

They also manipulate environmental regulations, which is what happened to Bundy. The government fukked him over by designating the desert tortoise as an endangered species.Except the government building solar panels on the SAME DAMN LAND also hurts desert tortoises, so that should tell you something about their intentions. A standard BLM move in Nevada is to designate something as an endangered species area in order to placate environmentalists and encourage the growth of Las Vegas's urban sprawl, all at the expense of ranchers.

Oh, and there's also the fact that they sent two hundred federal agents armed with sniper rifles to handle one rancher and his family. Can we maybe not downplay that?

So what if solar panels are "beneficial?" The whole point of renewable energy, apart just plain old nature loving, is energy independence. I want nothing to do with solar panels if the Chinese are going to build them.

I'm not going to deny that ranching has other problems. A lot of people complain about the effects of overgrazing, for example. There are also the subsidies issue (even though ranchers don't get direct price support like, say, farmers).

But this has nothing to do with subsidies or overgrazing.

I side with the feds, people need to listen to the govt.

I could never side with the evil govt. Im giving Bundy props winning this one. He already said he was more than happy to pay the State, his family owned that land since the 1800s, and they TOOK IT from him by force because of some turtles. fukk that excuse.....they could have removed the turtles and placed them somewhere else. Sorry but private land > turtles. U.S govt cares about animals now? what happened to the Buffalo? FOH.

I wish we'd done the same thing in cali when the feds were raiding our dispensaries.

Im also envious on how organized white people get and are willing to go to war over their rights.

The Bundy family was ranching in southern Nevada before the Bureau of Land Management ever existed.

The US was ceded the land in question by Mexico in 1848 under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The treaty recognized existing grantees of land, however, nobody owned the land in question at the time (and the Bundys didn't arrive in Nevada until 1877). According to the Nevada Constitution the federal government retained ownership of the land once the territory became a state. As stated in the Nevada constitution:

Third. That the people inhabiting said territory do agree and declare, that they forever disclaim all right and title to the unappropriated public lands lying within said territory, and that the same shall be and remain at the sole and entire disposition of the United States

The BLM is part of the Federal Government the federal government is part of the United States the United States had ownership of the land originally.

They look to make money off the land in any way possible -- highways, military contractors, whatever suits them. They paid these ranchers to manage the land, and then proceeded to fukk them over in any way possible.

So bottom line does that mean Bundy should be exempt from paying any fees for grazing federal government property unlike thousands of other ranchers that DO pay to use the land?

Sympathizing is one thing....to say Bundy is above the law and shouldn't have to pay like other ranchers is another.

This is all irrelevant to the case as to why Bundy feels he shouldn't have to pay fees for grazing on land he doesn't own. It is Federal government land it's their call no matter how fukked the situation is...that's the bottom line...that's the reason Bundy lost his case.

Incorrect, Bundy's family moved on the land in 1877, Mexico ceded the ownership to the United States in 1848. Nothing was taken from Bundy's family and there are no records or evidence to support that Bundy had inherited rights to the land first.
