This is one of the biggest threats to Americans' personal data in decades. If you're a 23andMe customer, I strongly urge you to delete your data to protect it from whoever the new buyer might be. Here’s how:

I can't imagine that clicking on delete would somehow magically eliminate your data vs just eleminate your access to it.

Thanks for the heads up. Much appreciated.

Oh sweet child, that data has been sold so many time over already

Slow clapping for all the commenters who want to let everyone know they didn't give their DNA to 23andme. So helpful.

How many times a day do we have to say "we told you so"?

7/35
🇺 nerdular.bsky.social
None?

Still not as big a threat as the terrorist regime and Elonia Muskrat

Their website is currently down.

Wow, so glad you and your fellow Dems are on the...wait...you are just gonna roll over and get a gentlemanly belly rub again? Time to get the hell off the high road and do something!

🇺 felicianmitzi.bsky.social
I'm glad I never did that. Thought about it but never did.

Same.

Done! ✅

You know what I don't understand, you all keep putting up these posts about how bad it is, but y'all are doing nothing to grind the Senate to a crawl and make the regime pay for every illegal act it does. Regime Nominees are also still sailing through. And I just don't understand the logic in that.

15/35
🇺 themadstatist.bsky.social
For what it's worth, I made the comment on this post, but I could've easily done the same on any of the others about the illegal and unconstitutional acts of this regime.

16/35
🇺 themadstatist.bsky.social
Apparently it's unimaginable that someone might choose to use any post to make point about a politician's or political Party's actions or inaction in general; even when they add a note about it as the second half of the comment. Oi. :/

Oregonian here to thank Mr. Wyden, I already deleted my data a few months ago when I saw the news. It was easy to delete it at that time, but you do need to remember your login data. Thankfully I have a password manager app because I haven't used the 23andme website in many years.

Musk has your social security number and birth date, and may very soon have your DNA. Nothing to be worried about. Nothing at all.

Done

20/35
🇺 marriedtoamedium.bsky.social
now u see why i never trust genetic companies. id rather not know and be anonymous, than have the building blocks of my dna go on a fire sale at a failed dna tracing business...

21/35
🇺 youwriteuniversity.bsky.social
For many adoptees this is the only recourse they have to finding out who they are and who their bio families are. That's how someone in my family found their biological dad, cousins, siblings etc.

22/35
🇺 marriedtoamedium.bsky.social
understood. i am an adoptee. but im not interested in finding out who my birth parents are, or to link w bio family. my adoptive family is crazy enuff as it is...LOL

23/35
🇺 youwriteuniversity.bsky.social
I get that you might not be interested, but there are many people out there who are interested in who their bio family is, if for no other reason than to know their medical histories.

24/35
🇺 marriedtoamedium.bsky.social
i know that. i personally know ppl who are very motivated by family ancestry. since i dont have one, for me, is not something im interested in.

whats happening with this company, in particular, is one of the privacy issues that concerns me with surrendering DNA to a database. risky.

25/35
🇺 jerzeegirl2000.bsky.social
I deleted my data and it makes me so sad because that company did so much for me in allowing me to find my long lost cousins.

26/35
🇺 timashman.bsky.social
The problem is, even if my dna is not directly in their database, if my brother's, sister's, mother, father are, they can figure mine out

27/35
🇺 jeffbrandt.bsky.social
Good luck, backed up everywhere

🇺 allchristmas.bsky.social
I just tried to login, you can’t get in. It’s not operating. You can shop, but you can’t access.
I wonder who got there ahead of us.

29/35
🇺 not-so-fluffy.bsky.social
I got in, but the site is running really, really slow, presumably because of server overloads. There is an entire page devoted to the current bankruptcy news and assurances that everything is secure and fine. Before you delete your account I recommend you ask for a genome file to store on a drive

30/35
🇺 jseib3.bsky.social
I had the same problem, really slow and then it gives me the…..oops, something went wrong message

31/35
🇺 rippoboy.bsky.social
Yeah, always thought that was a bad idea. Still do.

32/35
🇺 jasjennings.bsky.social
That’s scary and all I guess but did you fukking know we have actual fukking nazis in the White House? That’s a bit bigger. Don’t appease Nazis, destroy them~

33/35
🇺 jonathonbernard.bsky.social
Until said Nazis buy your dna and deny you loans because genetic testing confirms that you’re likely going to get xyz hereditary disease so we’re denying your loan because there’s an 58% chance you could contract xyz illness, die and fail to pay said loan back in full. Just one example.

Can someone please tell what the VERY WORST-case scenario is??
i mean the worst case scenario is one that is so implausible I hesitate from mentioning it

but it would be the dna records being sold to a company under the guise of research, being used for say, eugenics programs, predicting who will and won't be criminals or achievers, and subsequently dictating their lives that way.

if a nefarious party has the dna of an entire family tree and they're full of criminals, bootleggers, rapists, thieves, embezzlers, etc...including people you don't know, never met, going back 100s of years, and then labels you as that...then we have actual eugenics in place.

People who believe in this and race based IQ for example are in power right now in tech, medical, and political positions.

Should have used AfricanAncestry.com

It's their policy to delete your samples, and not sell to third parties

They was scamming people anyways, giving fake DNA results. I’m glad I never used this bullshyt and instead asked my grandmother about our family history.
