Minnie riperton wasn't very popular back then. I think she was considered more like sub-pop like Talib Kweli or Gill Scott.

However, her music was extremely influential to 90s hip-hop and Neo-soul. I recently listened to all her music, and I was shocked at how much she was imitated, and of course sampled, in 90s.
