The Islamic State has rounded up and executed an unknown number of foreign fighter due to fears that the militant group had been infiltrated by foreign intelligence operatives. This episode of mass executions were carried out in the wake of the Islamic State's execution of an American journalist. Jihadist fighters who were detained as they attempted to go home, told investigators that the command structure as well as commanders on the ground had become more suspicious of foreign fighters coming from abroad. Though the Islamic State has promoted its cause in a bid to attract more westerners to their cause, they say the risk of infiltration is more real now since the group had, as some Jihadis have said, 'declared war on the US and the EU.'
There have been unconfirmed reports before of the Islamic State, once known by its former acronym- ISIS, had carried out executions of alleged Mossad and FSB agents who'd infiltrated into the highly trained and now heavily armed Jihadist force that has merged their areas in both Syria and Iraq together to form a caliphate.
Thousands of fighters from every corner of the world have converged on the region and joined the Islamic state. Some of the fighters are reported to be former soldiers in their nations' armies, with some given training and others given command roles in the groups fight for control in the region.
However, the flood of foreign fighters have also fed fears that foreign intelligence operatives were infiltrating the group for a number of reasons from gathering intelligence on the inner workings of militant units on the front lines to possibly assassinating key members of the Islamic State's command structure including its leader, Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi.
The level of fear was already high when unconfirmed reports of a video have surfaced in which Ayman Al Zawahiri, the leader of Al Qaeda, made a video in which he issued a Fatwa declaring the leadership of the Islamic State to be apostates and that all 'devout' Muslims were to wage jihad against the Islamic State. The Islamic State is fighting both the Syrian regime as well as the FSA and Al Nusra, which is Al Qaeda's recognized branch in Syria.
Although foreign fighter are given roles as commanders in the Islamic States front line units, the command structure is said to have only Arabs from the region. Saudi and Kuwaiti nationals who've contributed large amounts of funding to the Islamic State are given roles within the senior command structure. Unconfirmed reports state that recruiters for foreign fighters are now being told to find ways to verify the credentials of possible new recruits, some were even being told not to accept or vouch for individuals they didn't know for at least 2 or 3 years out of fear that infiltrators were using mosques as gateways into the group.
Foreign jihaists already in the Islamic State are said to be going through a series of intense interrogations to see if they are or they know the identities of infiltrators. The nationalities of those fighters already executed are not known nor was when the purported executions were carried out, except that the general consensus is that they were carried out within the last few days.
Intelligence sources have not issued any statement on the matter, neither confirming or denying claims of infiltration.
