Miyamoto on Wii U's poor sales - "people didn't understand the system"

Poor Wii U. Given the lack of games shown off at Nintendo's E3 2015 conference last week, it's easy to see how far the console has fallen. In a frank interview with NPR, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto is honest about the challenges that the console has faced. When asked about the price hike between the Wii and the Wii U putting people off upgrading, the team doesn't see that as the only factor.
"So I don't think it's just price, because if the system is appealing enough, people will buy it even if the price is a little bit high," Miyamoto says. "I think with Wii U, our challenge was that perhaps people didn't understand the system." He doesn't say exactly why this was - anyone remember when people just thought it was the gamepad? - but is clear on what the mission statement was for the console in the first place.
"I think that we had a system that's very unique — and, particularly with video game systems, typically it takes the game system a while to boot up," he explains. "And we thought that with a tablet-type functionality connected to the system, you could have the rapid boot-up of tablet-type functionality, you could have the convenience of having that touch control with you there on the couch while you're playing on a device that's connected to the TV, and it would be a very unique system that could introduce some unique styles of play."

Yet the appearance of second screen apps for other consoles really undermined the progressive ideas behind the Wii U. "I think unfortunately what ended up happening was that tablets themselves appeared in the marketplace and evolved very, very rapidly, and unfortunately the Wii system launched at a time where the uniqueness of those features were perhaps not as strong as they were when we had first begun developing them," says Miyamoto. "So what I think is unique about Nintendo is we're constantly trying to do unique and different things. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they're not as big of a hit as we would like to hope. After Wii U, we're hoping that next time it will be a very big hit."
The use of 'next time' suggests that the Wii U is already somewhat behind the company as it looks forward to the NX console that we'll hear more about next year. You can read the full interview with NPR here.

People understood the system quite well:

It's underpowered compared to the other current gen consoles and the last gen consoles
Overpriced due to the gamepad
3rd parties didn't fukk with it
All it has were Nintendo games
Didn't have the features that other systems had, including standard last gen features
Overall marketing sucks

So yeah, people understood what it is, they just want nothing to do with it.:yeshrug:

Hopefully they learned their lesson and will make a decent console that keeps up next time.

They wont:shaq2:

This dude is one of the reasons nintendo is out of touch.

Not really, Miyamoto's role in the company nowadays is overseeing software development. Iwata is the one out of touch and it took tons of criticism and threats of throwing him out for him to change course.

The gamepad is the reason Wii U flopped. So unnecessary and expensive. They should've went with a normal controller
I don't mind the gamepad at all. I actually think its pretty dope. What's stupid is going through a box of wii motes and nunchucks to play the simplest of games. I don't think Nintendo realizes how irritating that is. The system was built with couch 4 players in mind, yet you have to break out all kinds of wired controllers and sit perfectly in front of the tv to play effectively. Then you have serious games like smash bros that are better play on a regular controller which opens up a slew of other crap you have to hook up to play.

Yeah but let's say your gamepad breaks, you might as well buy a whole new console it was way too expensive by itself. They couldn't drop the price any more on the system because of the gamepad, it was too expensive to produce, they lost a lot of money because of it. And it was bulky as shyt

I disagree. You're phone would probably cost about the same to replace if you dropped it. Just cause something is expensive to replace doesn't mean it isn't worth it. I don't really recall any mass complaints about the game pads breaking. Its size, while bulky, isn't uncomfortable to hold at all. I think they did a good job with the game pad. Also, playing on the game pad screen and keeping the tv free to use for other things was a great idea and it works flawlessly.

Its dope from what ive seen people do in art academy and when playing off screen but they should've made it optional and properly promoted the wii u. Hopefully they learned for next gen or just make software for the other consoles already. Should def put out more software too but think bout the OG consumers. Metroid prime blaster ball and the multiplayer zelda for 3ds:snoop::francis::to:

I agree but you missed my point. I'm not saying they broke easily. The gamepad was expensive because it cost a lot for them to manufacture it. And that in turn resulted in high costs on the console and they were not able to reduce the price without losing money. They just recently made a small price cut, but $300 for a console that dropped 3 years ago is way too much. A big reason for the success of the first Wii was the low price.

And it doesn't make sense that a controller costs more than half the price of the entire system (including a controller)

I don't think the price was too much to ask for honestly. Most of the consoles come with a game (Usually a really good game at that ie. Super Mario, or Mario Kart 8). It uses all the old wii controllers, plays original wii discs, with an adapter can use old gamecube controllers, and uses the old wii mote sensors, all while still being the least expensive of the consoles. It has more console exclusives than the other consoles as well. I've always said the Wii U suffers from the kiddie image Nintendo built as well as a poor online service. Otherwise, its a much better console than people give it credit for.
