Michael has said numerous times (even in depositions) that he would hum beats into a tape recorder along with the vocal arrangement and instruments.

If he didn’t have a tape recorder he would call home and record the shyt on his answering machine.

Later he’d do rough demos before the musicians got to replay everything.

By the end of the Bad era and into the Dangerous era his demos were so damn polished because he had equipment at home and his in house guys like Bill Botrrell and Bruce Swedien (in particular) were basically always with him during an album cycle and could clean up a demo while MJ moved to other things. Helped that these guys were also great engineers and loyal.
